Rani Padmavati Story - Story of Alauddin Khilji and Padmavati

Padmini, also known as Padmavati (रानी पद्मावती), was a legendary 13th-14th century Indian Queen. She was first mentioned in Padmavat, poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The text describes Padmavati of a beautiful princess of the Singhal kingdom (Sri Lanka). Ratan Sen, the Rajput ruler of Chittor, heard about her beauty. In an adventurous quest, he won her hand in marriage and brought her to Chittor. Alauddin Khilji aka Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi also heard about her beauty, and attacked Chittor to acquire her.Ratan Sen was killed in a duel with Devpal, the king of Kumbhalner who was also smitten by Padmavati's beauty. Before Alauddin Khalji could capture Chittor, Padmavati and her companions committed Jauhar (self-immolation) to protect their honour.

Story of Padmavati represents, A Hindu Rajput queen, who defended her honour against a Muslim man, over years, she came to be seen as a historical figure. ʿAlāʾ ud-Dīn Khaljī (r. 1296 – 1316) was the second and the most powerful ruler of the Khalji dynasty of Delhi Sultanate in the Indian subcontinent. Alauddin was a nephew and a son-in-law of his predecessor Jalaluddin. When Jalaluddin became the Sultan of Delhi after deposing the Mamluks, Alauddin was given the position of Amir-i-Tuzuk (equivalent to Master of ceremonies).

Alauddin obtained the governorship of Kara in 1291 after suppressing a revolt against Jalaluddin, and the governorship of Awadh in 1296 after a profitable raid on Bhilsa. In 1296, Alauddin raided Devagiri, and used the loot to stage a successful revolt against Jalaluddin. After killing Jalaluddin, he consolidated his power in Delhi, and subjugated Jalaluddin's sons in Multan.

Padmavati (Rani Padmini), was the daughter of Gandharv Sen, the king of the Singhal kingdom. She became close a parrot. Her father came to knew of the parrot's closeness and ordered the bird to be killed. The parrot flew away, but was trapped by a bird catcher, and sold to a Brahmin. The Brahmin bought it to Chittor, where the local king Ratan Sen (picturized as Maharawal Ratan Singh in the Padmavati Movie) purchased it.

The parrot praised Padmavati's beauty in front of King Maharawal Ratan Singh, who desired to marry Padmavati. Ratan Singh reached Singhal after being guided by the parrot.There, he went to a temple to seek Padmavati. Meanwhile, Padmavati came to the temple, informed by the parrot, but quickly returned to her palace without meeting Ratan Singh.
Meanwhile, Ratan Singh realized that he had missed a chance to meet Padmavati.  On God Shiva's advice, Ratan Sen (Singh) and his followers attacked the royal fortress of Singhal kingdom. They were defeated and imprisoned. His followers said that he was the king of Chittor. Gandharv Sen then married Padmavati to Ratan Singh. Ratan Sen (Singh) learned from a messenger bird that his first wife — Nagmati — is longing for him back in Chittor. Ratan Singh decided to return to Chittor, with his new wife.

How was Alauddin Khilji got to know about Rani Padmavati?

A rivalry developed between Ratan Singh's two wives, Nagmati and Padmavati. Sometime later, Ratan Singh banished a courtier named Raghav Chetan for fraud. He went to the court of Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi, and told him about the beauty of Padmavati. Sultan decided to acquire Padmavati, and capture Chittor. After failing to conquer to the Chittor fort, Alauddin told of a peace treaty.He cunningly captured Ratan Sen and took him to Delhi. Padmavati sought help from Ratan Sen's trustworthy subordinates Gora and Badal, who reached Delhi with their followers, disguised as Padmavati and her female companions. They rescued Ratan Sen; Gora was killed fighting the Delhi forces, while Ratan Sen and Badal reached Chittor safely.

Why Padmavati did the Johar (Jauhar)?

Meanwhile, Devpal, the Rajput king of Chittor's  Kumbhalner, was also smitten with Padmavati's beauty. When Ratan Singh returned to Chittor, he decided to punish Devpal. In the single combat, Devpal and Ratan Singh killed each other. Alauddin then invaded Chittor once again, to obtain Padmavati. Facing a certain defeat against Alauddin, Nagmati and Padmavati committed self-immolation / Johar / Jauhar (sati) on Ratan Sen's funeral pyre; other women of Chittor also died in mass self-immolation (jauhar). The men of Chittor fought to death against Alauddin, who acquired nothing but an empty fortress after his victory.

Rajput women of Rajasthan characterised Padmini as a historical figure who is an inspiration to womenhood. There is no historical evidence that she existed, she has become a symbol of bravery and sacrifice in Rajput history.

Padmavati Release date: Padmavati film is scheduled to be released in India on December 1, 2017 in conventional 2D as well as 3D. Paramount will handle the international release across 90 countries. In UK, Padmavati movie will release on 30 November, 2017.
