Padmini, also known as Padmavati, was a legendary 13th-14th century Indian queen (Rani). The earliest source to mention her is Padmavat, an epic poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 CE. The text, which features elements of fantasy, describes her story as follows: Padmavati was an exceptionally beautiful princess of the Singhal kingdom (Sri Lanka). Ratan Sen, the Rajput ruler of Chittor, heard about her beauty from a talking parrot named Hira-man. After an adventurous quest, he married her and brought her to Chittor. Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi also heard about her beauty, and attacked Chittor to obtain her. History of Chittorgarh with Real Story of Rani Padmini

Chittorgarh fort, today, stands as an epitome of the true Rajputana spirit, loyalty, devotion, bravery and a symbol of women power. The palace yell of the agonizing tale of its heroic Queen Padmavati (or fondly called Padmini.)




  • Padmavati was the daughter of Gandharv Sen, the king of the Singhal kingdom. 
  • She became close friends with a talking parrot named Hira-man. 
  • The parrot greatly praised Padmavati's beauty in front of Ratan Sen(King of Chittor), who became determined to marry Padmavati. 
  • Guided by the parrot and accompanied by his 16,000 followers, Ratan Sen reached Singhal after crossing the seven seas. 
  • There he defeated many princess and kings who also sought Padmavati hands on several competitions and won the hand of Padmavati.

Raghav Chaitanya served in Rana Ratan’s Singh’s court as Raj Purohit. But he was a mage in real who had a great hold on black magic. After Ratan Singh came to know about his reality, he banished Raghav after insulting him.To avenge his insult, Raghav reached Delhi and told Alauddin Khilji about the beauty of Rani Padmini and he, thought of attacking Chittor. Alauddin decided to obtain Padmavati, and besieged Chittor. Ratan Sen agreed to offer him tribute, but refused to give away Padmavati.


Allaudin captured Ratan Singh and sent a message to Padmini that the king would be released if she agrees to go along with him.Rani Padmini sent 700 troops to rescue Rana Ratan Singh and the troops were successful in rescuing the king but Khilji followed the troops and the king.

Meanwhile, Devpal, the Rajput king of Chittor's neighbour Kumbhalmer, had also become infatuated with Padmavati. While Ratan Sen was imprisoned in Delhi, he proposed marriage to Padmavati through an emissary. When Ratan Sen returned to Chittor, he decided to punish Devpal for this insult. In the ensuing single combat, Devpal and Ratan Sen killed each other.


Meanwhile, Alauddin invaded Chittor once again, to obtain Padmavati. Facing a certain defeat against Alauddin, Rani Padmini performed 'Jauhar' or self-immolation and sacrificed her life along with her woman companions.

Several films based on the legend of Padmini have been made in India. These include Debaki Bose's silent film Kamonar Agun or Flames of Flesh (1930), and the Hindi language Maharani Padmini (1964).

The film was originally scheduled for release on 17 November 2017, but protests in Rajasthan impacted filming and the release was pushed to 1 December 2017.

So, Did Rani Padmavati Really Exist?

Who Was Rani Padmini?

  • The greatest question to be considered here, is the very existence of the historical figure called Rani Padmini. 
  • The first mention of Padmini or Padmavati as she is better known, took place in medieval poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem ‘Padmavat’ in 1540.

According to Jayasi’s version, Rani Padmini was born at some point between the 13th and 14th century, in Simhal Dvipa, former Sri-Lanka. As the story goes, Padmini was noted for her unparalleled beauty and had caught the eye of many suitors. She also had a talking parrot by the name, Hira-mani, who spoke of Padmini’s beauty at length to Chittor’s Rana Ratan Singh, who then proceeded to travel to Simhal Dvipa and win her hand in the swayamvar.
Meanwhile, Delhi had come under the reign of one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate, Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji Dynasty (1290-1320 approx). Historical records state that he was on a ruthless mission to expand his kingdom and that Rajputana was one of his main targets. Alauddin apparently once received a visitor who turned out to be a banished sorcerer from Rana Ratan Singh’s kingdom. In order to avenge his dismissal, he seeded Alauddin with the idea that he must have this beautiful queen of Chittor. Following this, Alauddin set forth for Chittor, entrapped Rana Ratan Singh and told him that the price for his freedom would be his wife.
What followed was that, according to Jayasi and the variations of his work thereof, Rani Padmini made a plan to rescue her husband with the Rajput army, but it failed and the army lost many of its men. Rana Ratan Singh too was killed in the crossfire and by the time an elated Alauddin entered the castle to claim his prize, Padmini and the other women of Chittor had committed jauhar to save their honour.

That was the end of that tragic story.

But then, besides recorded and verifiable historical facts, there is another set of facts too, culturally constructed and embodied in popular memory, told, retold and retold yet again. The Padmavati story too, like many others, has undergone several mutations.

And finally, in 19th century Bengali literature, Padmavati began to embody the image of a heroic queen committing jauhar in order to save her honour from a lusty Muslim invader. These contained some of the primary mentions of Rani Padmini’s story that took on a communal hue.

These 19th century Bengali works, like Ranglal Bandhopadhyaya’s Padmini Upakhyan (1858), Jyotindranath Tagore’s Sarojini ba Chittor Akraman (1875), Kshiroprasad Vidyavinod’s Padmini (1906) and Abanindranath Tagore’s Rajkahini (1909), all had one thing in common: they all presented the Rajputs as brave sacrificial warriors protecting their women, lands, and importantly, religion, against the lustful ‘Muslim’ aggressor, reports Scroll.

Rajasthan's Chittorgarh Fort remains closed today amid protests against the movie. The tourists were told to go back in the morning. Vandalism was reported at the 7th century fort earlier when Sanjay Leela Bhansali was shooting the movie here.

Padmavati (Rani Padmini), was the daughter of Gandharv Sen, the king of the Singhal kingdom. She became close a parrot. Her father came to knew of the parrot's closeness and ordered the bird to be killed. The parrot flew away, but was trapped by a bird catcher, and sold to a Brahmin. The Brahmin bought it to Chittor, where the local king Ratan Sen (picturized as Maharawal Ratan Singh in the Padmavati Movie) purchased it.

The parrot praised Padmavati's beauty in front of King Maharawal Ratan Singh, who desired to marry Padmavati. Meanwhile, Ratan Singh realized that he had missed a chance to meet Padmavati.  On God Shiva's advice, Ratan Sen (Singh) and his followers attacked the royal fortress of Singhal kingdom. They were defeated and imprisoned. His followers said that he was the king of Chittor. Gandharv Sen then married Padmavati to Ratan Singh. Ratan Sen (Singh) learned from a messenger bird that his first wife — Nagmati — is longing for him back in Chittor. Ratan Singh decided to return to Chittor, with his new wife.

A rivalry developed between Ratan Singh's two wives, Nagmati and Padmavati. Sometime later, Ratan Singh banished a courtier named Raghav Chetan for fraud. He went to the court of Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi, and told him about the beauty of Padmavati. Sultan decided to acquire Padmavati, and capture Chittor. After failing to conquer to the Chittor fort, Alauddin told of a peace treaty.He cunningly captured Ratan Sen and took him to Delhi. Padmavati sought help from Ratan Sen's trustworthy subordinates Gora and Badal, who reached Delhi with their followers, disguised as Padmavati and her female companions. They rescued Ratan Sen; Gora was killed fighting the Delhi forces, while Ratan Sen and Badal reached Chittor safely.

In the single combat, Devpal and Ratan Singh killed each other. Alauddin then invaded Chittor once again, to obtain Padmavati. Facing a certain defeat against Alauddin, Nagmati and Padmavati committed self-immolation / Johar / Jauhar (sati) on Ratan Sen's funeral pyre; other women of Chittor also died in mass self-immolation (jauhar). The men of Chittor fought to death against Alauddin, who acquired nothing but an empty fortress after his victory.
